The zwanzigquadradmeter (zqm) offers artists a combination of residency program and solo exhibition space. The artist will receive the key to the 20m2 space on the 1st floor of a rear building in Berlin for one month to realise a new work in situ. After this, the zqm opens to the public and their work is displayed for a further month. Located in the heart of Friedrichshain, zqm is one of a few places where artists are given space for the experimental development of a site-specific exhibition. The zqm was founded in 2007 by Eric Emery and taken over by Anselm Schenkluhn and Miriam Jesske in Autumn 2022. Since it was founded, there have been several relaunches. This is symbolic of the changes in the Berlin artist's scene and is also representative of the respective style of the space's successive curators. As an independent platform that supports the young-contemporary art scene, the zqm enables a unique dynamic of direct exchange between artists, curators, the audience and the project space landscape of Berlin. Numerous national and international artists have taken part in the program. More than 90 exhibitions have been realised, including Valentina Pini, Elisabeth Tubergen, Lukas Liese and Stefanie Schwarzwimmer. Some of the exhibitions were created in cooperation with universities such as the Stuttgart State Academy of Fine Arts (ABK), the Berlin University of the Arts (UdK) and the University of Art and Design (ECAL) in Lausanne. Previous exhibitions in the zqm have been funded by programs from the DAAD, DGARTES Portugal and other international cultural foundations.
